Replacement engines :   In the last 18 months we have seen an increase in engine replacements, in particular Discovery 3, 4 and 5, Range Rover Sports and Velar with 2 litre ingenium and 3 ltr TDV6 engines. We cannot say exactly what the causes are of these engine failures are but we are highly recommending that regular 12 month servicing is a must. Some Land Rover models have a 2 year service schedule which we feel is too long and therefore highly recommend an interim oil service so that at the very least the engine has had fresh oil and sometimes we can spot when things are beginning to wear or possibly go wrong. Replacing an engine is very costly and takes a long time, we have to be meticulous in our removal, swopping over all parts necessary from the old engine to the new, and then refitting all parts removed. Our highly skilled technicians are methodical in their work particularly with some vehicles requiring the body to be seperated from the chassis and others the whole front end of the vehicle is removed. Timing Chains :  In light of the problems we have seen with the 2 litre Ingenium engines, we have now started to diagnose and replace timing chains on these particular engines.  This is again a very festidious process requiring accuracy, cleaniness and attention to detail.

As with all these problems, the starting process is correct diagnostics.

So if you hear any strange noises with your engine or experience any issues, please book in for an initial diagnostics. We will carry out a computer read to check for any relevant faults, such as a Cam Shaft Position Sensor fault together with a hearing test and visual inspection. If we believe the timing chain to have stretched, timing guides to have failed or cam bolts to have become lose,  then, we would recommend a PICO Scope test to confirm the health of your engine.  Then depending on the results of the PICO Scope test, we would advise either a timing chain replacement or an engine replacement, as we would not want to recommend a chain on a failing engine.

Some of the other things that can be diagnosed with the PICO Scope test is :

compression related issues that can cause poor running, misfire and emissions related symptoms.

Typical faults that cause compression issues are:

  • Intake or exhaust valve timing or sealing faults;
  • Piston, bore and/or compression ring faults;
  • Blocked air filter or intake;
  • Blocked exhaust;
  • Turbo faults;
  • Cylinder bore washing; or
  • Engine lubrication problems.

In-cylinder pressure testing can be used to confirm compression issues with engine cranking or running conditions.

Dakar Cars Ltd was formed in 1991 to design and build the Dakar 4x4, sales were made across the world,  it was best known as the vehicle used Anneka Rice in her TV show Challenge Anneka.

 The CAT award topped an exciting few years for the firm, which had grown rapidly since adding their MOT bay in 2005. In 2009 Dakar Cars were voted Garage of the Year - "Dartford and Bexley based Dakar Cars has won the prestigious 2009 Garage of the Year title in the Car and Accessory Trader (CAT) Magazine Awards". We also won Garage of the Year 2009 sponsored by Euro Car Parts.

 During the following years, we continued to grow our client database mainly through recommendations. We remain update with our diagnostic equipment and skills particularly with the newer Land Rovers. In 2016 we proudly celebrated 25 years in the business and we continue to look forward to the next 25 years.
